Shui urban spa is a high-concept, five-star day
spa located in the heart of Shanghai, China.
On many levels, this has been one of the most
interesting and challenging projects I’ve ever
worked on.
The spa’s architect came up with a very original
and creative concept for its design - “white and
shadows.” What this means is that we didn’t
work with any other color but white (with the
exception of the floor which had to be black for
practical reasons.) She utilized various lighting
techniques, crystals, fabrics, glass, and other
materials to play with light and shadows to
naturally create colors. Pretty cool huh?
This posed a unique challenge for me as a
designer as I was forced to approach this in a
different way. For instance, I had to come up
with a logo using only white that would not only
look good, but also translate well into a sign.
Challenging as this project was, it was also a
lot of fun. I had a blast working on the wall
sculpture and hallway waves. As much as I
love everything creative, what I truly enjoy
doing most are large-scale murals and wall
installations.
